I dislike some parts of keeping animals, and dealing with predators ranks at the top. It turns my stomach and makes me uneasy. If there were another way, I would take it without hesitation.
I’ve always loved animals, so it pains me to confront the small predators that target my poultry. Still, when a predator repeatedly kills birds, I have to act to protect the rest of the flock.
Below I describe how I deal with a skunk that is preying on poultry. The method takes time but is designed to minimize harm to the animal, which is important to me.
The approach is gentle whenever possible, which usually helps prevent the skunk from spraying. Here’s the routine I follow.
