Mayo, Mustard, and Now Marmite: The Sandwich Spread Trend

I prefer mayonnaise to Miracle Whip and deli spicy mustard to yellow mustard, but my latest discovery for sandwich spreads may be the most surprising: Marmite. While Marmite is a familiar staple for many in the UK, it remains relatively unknown to many Americans—especially as a sandwich spread. After trying it, I doubt I’ll go back.

Using Marmite on a sandwich isn’t revolutionary, but as someone who takes pride in building thoughtful sandwiches, I was struck by how a very simple Marmite sandwich could deliver such bold flavor. Even more surprising: my favorite versions were vegetarian. I managed to assemble complex, satisfying sandwiches without any deli meat.

Before this I mainly enjoyed Marmite on buttered toast for breakfast. Ready to branch out but unsure where to start, I looked around for suggestions and reached out to a friend, Stuart, for guidance. He recommended starting simple and offered two combinations to try.

Stuart’s first suggestion was plain and effective: Marmite, Cheddar cheese and bread. The second option added freshness: Marmite, Cheddar cheese, cucumber and bread. He emphasized using a strong, sharp cheddar and a quality loaf with good crust and texture rather than standard pre-sliced sandwich bread. I followed that advice—toasted slices of artisan whole wheat, layered sliced sharp cheddar and, for the second sandwich, thin cucumber slices. I like a generous smear of Marmite, so I didn’t hold back.

Both versions were excellent. Marmite adds a layered, savory complexity that makes each bite linger. The toasted bread provides chew and texture, the sharp cheddar contributes richness and body, and the Marmite brings an umami punch that ties everything together. When I added cucumber, the sandwich gained a crisp, refreshing contrast that balanced the savory depth with a cool crunch.

As Americans we’re proud of our sandwich culture—whether it’s the comfort of a childhood PB&J, a foot-long Italian from a local deli, or a towering creation featured on a food show. Still, there’s something compelling about a simple, restrained Marmite sandwich that focuses on quality ingredients and balanced flavors. It’s opened my mind to new combinations and earned a permanent place among my go-to spreads.
